At The Romestead Flower Farm in Cambridge, Minnesota, we love welcoming new visitors into the world of you-pick flowers. For many guests, this is more than just a walk through a field—it’s a memory in the making. But if you’ve never been to a flower farm before, you might be wondering: What exactly happens on a you-pick visit? What should I bring? What should I wear? Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know before stepping foot in the flower fields. From what to expect when you arrive to how to cut your stems like a pro, here’s your complete primer for a successful (and joy-filled) first visit to The Romestead.

What Is a You-Pick Flower Farm, Anyway?

A you-pick (also called U-pick or pick-your-own) flower farm is just what it sounds like: a working flower farm where you’re invited to pick your own blooms directly from the field. Think of it like strawberry or apple picking—but instead of fruit, you’re filling a bucket or bouquet with fresh-cut flowers, straight from the source.

At The Romestead, our fields are full of seasonally rotating blooms like zinnias, sunflowers, dahlias, cosmos, snapdragons, and more. You’ll wander the rows, snip your favorites, and take home a handmade bouquet grown with love right here in Minnesota.

When You Arrive: A Warm Welcome Awaits

As you pull up to the farm, you’ll find signage directing you to our parking area, located on the grass near the field. We are a self-serve farm but Amanda can often be found out in the field to answer any questions, especially if it’s your first time.

Once you’ve parked, you’ll check in at our welcome station or flower stand. Here’s where the fun starts! We'll provide:

  • A cup (fill with water nearby)

  • Snips or flower scissors (or you’re welcome to bring your own)

  • A how-to flyer on where to pick, how to cut flowers, and what’s in bloom

From there, it’s time to explore!

What to Wear to a You-Pick Flower Farm

The best outfit for flower picking is one that’s comfortable, sun-smart, and made for walking in nature. Here's what we recommend:

Footwear

Wear closed-toe shoes or boots that can handle a bit of dirt. You'll be walking on grass, mulch, and soil—sometimes uneven or muddy.

Clothing

Dress for the weather! On warm days, lightweight long sleeves and pants help protect you from sun and insects. On cooler days, layers are key. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are also helpful.

Extras

  • Sunscreen

  • Bug spray

  • Refillable water bottle

  • Optional: Gardening gloves (especially for sunflowers or scratchier stems)

How to Pick Flowers Like a Pro

Never cut a flower before? No problem. We’ll have signs and descriptions available, but here are a few tips to get you started.

Where to Cut

  • Use sharp, clean snips or scissors.

  • Cut the stem about 6–12 inches down, depending on the flower.

  • Always cut just above a leaf node to encourage more blooms.

Keep Flowers Fresh

  • Place flowers into your cup of water immediately after cutting.

  • Keep your bucket in the shade while you pick.

  • Don’t overfill—give each stem some breathing room.

Be Respectful of the Field

  • Only cut flowers in designated picking areas.

  • Watch your step—be gentle with plants and avoid trampling.

  • Pick only what you’ll use—we grow with love and care!

Taking Photos on the Farm

We love seeing guests document their visits—and The Romestead is a dream backdrop for photos. You’re welcome to take all the personal pictures you’d like during your visit. A few friendly reminders:

  • Step carefully between rows.

  • Respect other visitors’ space and privacy.

  • Professional or posed photo sessions (like engagements or senior portraits) may require a photography pass—check with us ahead of time!

Golden hour (an hour before sunset) is a gorgeous time for dreamy flower field photos.

How Much Does It Cost?

Our pricing is simple, transparent, and based on the container you use. At The Romestead Flower Farm, we offer:

  • A cup (32oz): $25

  • BYO 5 Gallon Bucket: $60

You can build your bouquet however you like—mix and match colors, styles, or even create a themed bundle (wildflowers only, pinks and pastels, harvest tones, etc.). Fill your bucket as much as possible!

We accept cash, credit/debit cards, and mobile payments like Venmo at the flower stand.

Can I Bring My Own Supplies?

Absolutely! If you’d prefer to bring your own tools or 5 gallon bucket, you’re welcome to bring them. Here are some things you might want to pack:

  • Clean snips or floral scissors

  • Extra water if bringing your own bucket

  • A tote or basket for carrying flowers to your bucket

  • A damp towel or cloth to wrap stems for the ride home

Just make sure everything is clean and safe for use in the fields.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Flower picking in Minnesota is a seasonal treat. Our U-Pick season runs from early June to early October, depending on the weather. Each part of the summer brings different flowers to the spotlight.

Time of Day

  • Morning: Cooler, dewy, and peaceful—perfect for cutting long-lasting flowers

  • Late afternoon: Golden light, comfortable temps, and fewer crowds

  • Midday: Sunny and vibrant, but can be hot—bring a hat and water

Check our social media for bloom updates.

Flower Care Tips for Home

Want your bouquet to last as long as possible? Follow these simple steps when you get home:

  1. Re-cut your stems at an angle under running water.

  2. Remove any leaves that will sit below the water line.

  3. Place your flowers in a clean vase filled with cool, fresh water.

  4. Change the water every 1–2 days.

  5. Keep the vase out of direct sunlight and away from heat or drafts.

Some flowers (like zinnias and cosmos) last a full week or more with proper care!
